A
Above the Fold
The area of a webpage or printed piece that’s visible without scrolling or unfolding — your prime real estate for important messages and visuals.
Alignment
How text and images line up visually on a page or screen. Strong alignment gives your design structure and balance.
Asset
Any creative file used in a project, such as photos, logos, icons, or videos.
B
Baseline
The invisible line on which text sits. Maintaining consistent baselines keeps typography neat and readable.
Bleed
Extra space that extends beyond the edge of your design to ensure there are no white borders when trimmed after printing.
Brand Identity
The complete system of visuals, words, and experiences that define how your audience perceives your business.
Brand Voice
The consistent personality and tone in your communication that helps people recognize and relate to your brand.
C
Call to Action (CTA)
A phrase or button that tells your audience what to do next — like “Start a Project” or “Schedule a Meeting.”
CMYK
The color model used for print: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black).
Contrast
The difference between visual elements, such as light and dark colors or large and small type, to draw attention and improve readability.
Crop Marks
Thin lines printed around a design to show where the paper should be trimmed.
D
DPI (Dots Per Inch)
A measure of print resolution. Higher DPI means sharper, higher-quality prints.
Die Cut
A custom shape cut out of printed material to create unique designs like business cards or packaging.
Digital Footprint
Your brand’s total online presence, from websites and social media to email and SEO.
E
E-Blast / Email Campaign
A designed email sent to a large group to share updates, promotions, or news.
Engagement
Any interaction between your brand and your audience — likes, shares, comments, or responses.
F
File Formats
Different types of files used in design. Common ones include .AI (Adobe Illustrator), .PDF, .JPG, .PNG, and .EPS.
Font vs. Typeface
A typeface is the design style (like Helvetica); a font is a specific size or weight of that typeface (like Helvetica Bold 12pt).
Fold / Panel
How a brochure or printed piece is divided and folded — such as tri-fold, bi-fold, or gate fold.
G
Gutter
The space between columns of text or the inner margins of a book or brochure. It prevents content from disappearing into the binding.
Gradient
A gradual transition between two or more colors, often used for depth or emphasis.
H
Hierarchy
The visual order that guides the viewer’s eye through information — usually achieved through size, color, and weight.
Hex Code
A six-digit color code used in digital design (like #F7B046) to ensure consistency across platforms.
I
Iconography
A consistent set of visual symbols or icons that represent your brand’s ideas or services.
Imagery
Photography or illustrations that support your brand story and emotional tone.
K
Kerning
The space between individual letters. Adjusting kerning improves the readability and look of text.
L
Leading
The space between lines of text. Proper leading makes reading comfortable and visually pleasing.
Logo Kit
A collection of logo variations, file types, and usage guidelines to ensure consistency across media.
M
Margin
The space between your content and the edge of the page. Margins keep your layout clean and readable.
Mockup
A realistic preview of a design in use, such as a brochure on a desk or a logo on signage.
O
Opacity
How transparent or solid an element appears. Adjusting opacity helps create layering and depth.
Optimization
The process of adjusting content or images to improve performance — for speed, SEO, or visual quality.
P
Pantone (PMS)
A standardized color system used for consistent color reproduction in printing.
Pixel (PX)
The smallest unit of a digital image. Screen designs are measured in pixels, not inches.
Proof
A preliminary version of a design for review before final approval or printing.
R
Resolution
The clarity of an image, measured in DPI (print) or PPI (digital). Higher resolution equals better quality.
RGB
The color model used for digital screens: Red, Green, and Blue.
S
Safety Zone
The area inside the trim line where all important content should stay to avoid being cut off.
Sans Serif / Serif
Serif fonts have small decorative strokes at the ends of letters; sans serif fonts do not.
Saturation
The intensity or purity of a color.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
The practice of improving your website’s visibility in search engines like Google.
T
Typography
The art of arranging type — choosing fonts, sizes, and spacing to make text legible and visually engaging.
Tagline
A short, memorable phrase that captures the essence of a brand or campaign.
V
Vector File
A graphic built from scalable paths rather than pixels, so it can resize without losing quality (.AI, .EPS, .SVG).
Visual Identity
The visual components of your brand — logo, colors, fonts, imagery — that create a unified look.
W
White Space
Also called “negative space,” it’s the empty area in a layout that gives breathing room and balance.
Wireframe
A basic layout or blueprint of a website showing structure before visual design is added.
Z
Z-Pattern / F-Pattern
Common ways people scan web pages: either across and down in a Z shape or following blocks of content in an F shape. Designers use these patterns to guide attention.
