Case Study – John Palumbo Memorial Golf Tournament.
Event branding and sponsorship system for a legacy worth honoring
YCAPS came to us in late summer 2025 with a meaningful challenge. They wanted to launch a first annual memorial golf tournament that would honor Dr. John Palumbo and create a new stream of scholarship funding for the next generation of agricultural students.
That kind of assignment asks for more than a logo and a sponsor sheet. It has to feel right. It has to honor the person, respect the community, and give sponsors a clear reason to step in with confidence.
We started where all good tributes start, with the person. Dr. Palumbo devoted 35 years to the University of Arizona and the Yuma Agricultural Center, earned national recognition for his work in integrated pest management, and left a personal legacy that was just as memorable as his professional one. The event needed to reflect both. It had to feel established from day one and worthy of the man it was built to remember.
The Moment It Clicked
This was never just a golf tournament.
It was a legacy event in an agricultural community that understands the weight of reputation, service, and relationships. Once that was clear, the work became about more than looking polished. We needed to build an identity and sponsorship system that felt personal, local, credible, and easy to say yes to.
What We Protected
We were careful to protect what mattered most.
We protected Dr. Palumbo’s likeness so the logo felt like him and not a generic memorial mark. We protected his passion for the agricultural community and the mission he cared about. We also protected YCAPS itself by helping them launch a new fundraiser that strengthened the scholarship program without putting pressure on the trust they had already built through existing fundraising channels.
Approach
The work needed to do three things well.
First, it had to create an event identity that honored John and felt established from the start.
Second, it had to make the sponsorship offer clear, practical, and easy to act on.
Third, it had to give YCAPS a toolkit they could use now and build on in future years without reinventing the wheel.
That meant we were not simply decorating an event. We were building the spine that would help it sell, scale, and stay consistent.
Deliverables
We began with the emblem.
The tournament logo features an illustrated portrait of Dr. Palumbo, shaped as a confident line drawing with an easy smile. The mark sits within a circular badge so it reads cleanly on caps, polos, tee signs, and event applications. The palette draws from field greens, sunlit gold, and desert sky blue, with supporting tones that give the system flexibility across print and on-course signage. Typography paired a sturdy slab serif with a clean sans serif so the event could feel both professional and rooted in place.
From there, the project expanded into a full event and sponsorship system.

The Problem We Solved
Before this work, the event did not yet exist as a fully formed public-facing fundraiser. YCAPS had a strong scholarship mission and community trust, but a first-year memorial tournament still needed to prove itself quickly. It needed to feel worthy of John, credible to sponsors, and organized enough that partners could see exactly how to participate.
After the system was built, the event had a clear identity, a structured sponsorship offer, and a full set of materials that made outreach cleaner and easier. The story was easier to tell, the value was easier to understand, and participation had a clear path.
Results in Two Lanes
Business Outcome
The event launched successfully and brought in more than $80,000 in sponsorships in its first year. That kind of response is not small. It gave YCAPS a powerful second fundraising pillar and helped support more scholarship applicants moving forward.
Practical Outcome
YCAPS now has a large asset library that does not need to be rebuilt each year. The core system is in place. Future versions can be refined, expanded, and reused, which makes planning easier and protects consistency over time.
Before / After / And Beyond
Before: a meaningful event idea with a major responsibility attached to it. It needed identity, structure, sponsor clarity, and a polished public face worthy of Dr. Palumbo’s legacy.
After: a fully developed memorial tournament brand and sponsorship system that helped the event launch with confidence, community trust, and strong first-year support.
And Beyond: more than $80,000 in sponsorships during the first year, plus a reusable toolkit that now supports future tournaments without starting from scratch.
Impact
The mission underneath the event is what gives the whole project its weight.
Founded in 2007, YCAPS has awarded hundreds of scholarships and invested deeply in agricultural education for students from Yuma County and the Imperial Valley. The program is designed to help students continue through graduation and, ideally, return to put those skills to work in the region. The Harvest Dinner remains a major pillar of that fundraising work. The John Palumbo Memorial Golf Tournament created another one.
That is why this project mattered. It was not about creating one attractive fundraiser. It was about building a lasting tool that could help more deserving students say yes to their future.
